10 Truths About Discipline Pt. 1

These are notes taken from a message I did a few weeks ago about Discipline and Self Control. This is points 1 – 4 the rest of the message notes will be posted in the next few days.

10 Truths about Discipline:

2 Timothy 1:7 “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power and love and self-control”

1.God Created you with a spirit of Power and Self Control (discipline)…. ….That is a Good thing

*This Verse is saying that Power, love and discipline go hand in hand and are the opposite of Fear & weakness.

 2. God wants you to become the best version of you. (As you were created)

– Discipline is how this will be possible. / A lack of discipline is weakness & fear. Selfishness,

– Bible calls this Process of discipline Sanctification… process of becoming like Christ.

Discipline is a way to refine, train, correct and create the best version of Who God created you to be.

in order to Make you better, to save for the best, train to be able to handle more and more, to be ready for what God has for us.

Best way for God to use you is to be the most efficient, successful, disciplined version of yourself

–       Discipline will make you a better person, more influencial, more effective, more equipped, prepared… useable to build the kingdom.

 3. Challenge: We live in an incredibly undisciplined world,

– Do what I want, when I want, when I feel like it….Take what I want, when I want it… no patience, can’t wait for things, can’t stick things out.

– We Give up when it gets tough, quit, try again next time. Put it on someone else…

– there is a lack of attention span, lack of commitment, incredible obesity, lack of health, increasing debt, addiction…

* People disciplined in certain areas, use as an excuse or way to cover up other areas of weakness

Someone may be Disciplined with Health / working out – but can’t control their temper, emotions of their tongue, no filter…

May be Very disciplined with schoolwork / job – but making time building relationships is lacking, family (Time)

Very Organized & efficient – But your thought life is terrible, gossip, think and say hurtful things…

Very careful with your words – but you give up so easily, quit, cant stick things out. Lack discipline…

4. People with self-discipline have the ability to master themselves : (They master these 6 Areas)

 A. Moods. They live by their commitments, not their emotions.

Proverbs 25:28 LB. “A man without self-control is as defenseless as a city with broken-down walls”

“People who do the right thing even when they don’t feel like it, accomplish most of what gets done in the world”

B. Words. They put their minds in gear before opening their mouths… use wisdom, patient & love / build

Proverbs 13:3 NIV “He who guards his lips guards his life”

C. Reactions. How much can you take before you lose your cool? / even tempered / know how to cool off

*Proverbs 19:11 “If you are sensible, you will control your temper. When someone wrongs you, it is a great virtue to ignore it”

D. Schedule. (Time) Their priorities, what they have time for, how they spent it, what is really important.

Ephesians 5:15–16“Live life, then, with a due sense of responsibility, Make the best use of your time”

– If you don’t determine how you spend your time you can be sure that others will decide for you!

E. Finances… asks advice, uses wisdom, resources themselves

Proverbs 21:20 “The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets”

– Self discipline allows us to manage and grow the resources that God has given us.
